I’m Heather — a Traditional Western & Folk Herbalist and the maker behind B.A.D. Apothecary.
I didn’t plan on becoming a soapmaker. Another herbal maker asked if I could learn how to make soap for her because she didn’t have the time, and I agreed — mostly because I didn’t have anything better to focus on. My family was still navigating life after the loss of my 13‑year‑old son, and everything felt heavy and quiet.
Then one afternoon, while I was attempting yet another batch of soap that went hilariously wrong, my mom and my daughter Becca started laughing — really laughing — for the first time since his passing. That moment stopped me. I realized this messy little project was giving us something we desperately needed: a spark of joy again.
So I kept going. Becca, who was twelve then (and is twenty‑one now), became my original soaping assistant. My mom jumped in too. What began as a way to bring light back into our home slowly grew into the salves, oils, soaps, and herbal creations I make today.
These products weren’t created for shelves — they were created for my family, with intention, comfort, and simplicity at the center.
